How to Teach your Child Good Manners

Usually, kids who make too much noise in public are considered ill-mannered. In addition, the direct blame goes to the parenting. The upbringing of children has questioned if the children are not well-behaved.

You cannot imbibe manners into the children directly. There requires a lot of patience and creativity. If you can do so, you can easily make your child well-behaved.

Even many adults do not behave in a civilized manner. Hence, children are excused for not behaving as required in society.

Being polite and patient is the key.

As parents, it is your prerogative to make your children well-mannered. You need to be patient and polite in your approach to them. In addition, you would need to inculcate those habits or provide the same environment for them to pick up good habits.

For example, if at home, parents are using words like thank you and sorry, the children will automatically make use of these words. Hence, it is even more crucial to teach children basic manners while being polite to them.

Sometimes parents lose their patience and keep on shouting at their children. This way, children also learn to shout and yell, which is not civilized behaviour.

Consequently, the most useful way to teach your youngsters is to behave the same way. If you are not behaving correctly and expect your children to behave a certain way, you are doing it wrong.

The attitude that children carry defines their personality when they grow up. The parent’s contribution is a crucial part of a child’s personality. Hence, work on their ethical values, communication skills, and other critical soft skills.

2. Introduce the concept of being polite from a young age

Being polite is very important. Nobody likes being disrespected or yelled at. As a parent, make your child understand the difference between being polite and speaking loud. They may not know the difference. Hence, you must imitate and explain.

For example, if you use words like, thank you, at home, it displays a polite attitude. The child will also learn the same thing from a very young age. Teaching can be different from preaching. If you teach your child these words, they may not understand. But if you practice in front of them, they will pick up quickly.

The first five years of every child are crucial. As parents, try to practice these values in front of them. Once they know, it will help them in the long run.

3. Lead by personal example

If a parent thinks that they can teach their children, they are right. But the way of teaching matters. Teachers usually do role-plays and stories in school, so children understand better.

Couples fighting at home in front of children teach the same to their children without knowing. This will unknowingly turn them into aggressive individuals. Hence, keep a check on your aggression and tone before talking to your children.

4. Be clear about personal boundaries

While inculcating manners, always tell them the boundaries and their importance. Your child should know to respect everybody’s boundaries. You cannot intervene or interfere in anybody’s matter.

If they do so, it is not liked by many people. In such cases, they may have to face dejection or nonchalance. Therefore, teach them beforehand about the importance of personal boundaries. They need to be respectful towards it.

5. Always acknowledge your child

Acknowledgement is very important. If you do not acknowledge your child, they will never have a sense of achievement.

For example, if your child is playing something and they make something out of it, acknowledge them. Do not just shun them away and scold them. Not acknowledging this might lead to severe consequences. Sometimes a child starts stammering or fumbling.

These are the significant consequences of not acknowledging your child on time. Try to be practical and be in their position. It may be disheartening for you if you do something and you are not being acknowledged. Hence, praise your child in whatever they do.

When you are explaining the do’s and don’ts of something to your children, there are high chances that they need help understanding on the spot. It is essential to explain the reason behind it.

If, for a specific reason, your child is misbehaving, do not let that situation go. Talk and make them understand. Be polite and calm in all such cases. Do not be excessively laborious with your child, as they may pick the same tone as you.
