Canada facing increased cyberattacks

In recent years, there has been an increase in cyberattacks originating from countries such as Russia and China. This is partly due to the global trend of increased espionage and cyber-espionage by nation states, as well as hackers seeking to exploit weak security measures on private companies and government agencies.

The Government of Canada has responded to this trend by increasing its spending on cybersecurity initiatives. In 2016, the Canadian government allocated $534 million for cybersecurity purposes, a 22% increase from the previous year. This money will be used to support projects such as upgrading computer systems and developing new software defences.

There are also efforts being made to educate businesses and citizens about how to protect themselves from cyberattacks. For example, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has launched a public awareness campaign called Protecting Your Privacy: Cybersecurity for Canadians. The campaign provides tips on how Canadians can keep their personal information safe online, including advice on setting up strong password hygiene habits and using anti-virus software.

While Canada faces increased cyberattacks, it is doing what it can to prepare for them and protect its citizens.

B.C. to get $1B in federal infrastructure funding

The Canadian government announced on Wednesday that it will allocate $1 billion to infrastructure projects throughout the country. The money is part of a five-year plan to invest in key areas such as renewable energy, transportation, health care, and rural communities. This is in addition to the $25 billion promised by the Trudeau government in its 2018 budget.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Communities says that this funding will create or maintain over 100,000 jobs across Canada. It will also help with things like housing development and improving postal service delivery. The funds will be spread out evenly among all provinces and territories, with British Columbia getting the largest allocation at $460 million.

Alberta introduces a carbon tax

Alberta has introduced a carbon tax, the first of its kind in Canada. The tax is set at $20/tonnes of CO2e and will apply to all fossil fuels starting in 2018. The cost of gas, oil, and coal will rise as a result.

The Alberta government hopes that the carbon tax will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by $8 billion over ten years. The province also plans to invest $3 billion in renewable energy over the next decade.

Alberta’s climate change strategy is one of the most ambitious in Canada. The province has set a goal of reducing its GHG emissions by 40% below 2005 levels by 2030. It also plans to develop a market-based cap-and-trade system to help reach that goal.

The carbon tax is an important part of Alberta’s climate change strategy, but it’s not the only thing that the province is doing to reduce GHG emissions. Other measures include investing in renewable energy, promoting electric vehicle use, and increasing Energy Efficiency Standards for buildings.

Air Canada announces new service to Cuba

Air Canada has announced a new service to Cuba that will commence on January 3, 2019. The service will fly from Toronto to Havana six times a week, with prices starting at C$439 CAD one-way. Air Canada is the only airline currently serving Cuba, and this new service is expected to appeal to tourists and business travellers alike.

Cuba has been closed off to foreigners for over fifty years, but recent changes in the political landscape have led to renewed interest in visiting the island country. Air Canada’s new service is one of the first indications of how tourism might develop in the future, and could pave the way for other airlines to follow suit.

Air Canada’s new Cuba service will be welcomed by many travellers eager to explore an off-the-beaten-path destination. The airline has already announced plans to serve Mexico City and Buenos Aires from Toronto via Havana beginning next year, so it seems likely that more options will become available as travel restrictions are relaxed.

Trump’s revised travel ban takes effect

The revised travel ban, which was announced by President Trump on Wednesday, takes effect on Thursday. The new order, which is expected to be more narrowly tailored than the original ban, will still deny entry to citizens from six Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. But it will also include two additional countries: Chad and Venezuela. The new order replaces Trump’s first travel ban, which was blocked by the courts. Trump has said that the revised ban is better because it is more focused on security threats.

Critics of the new order say that it is still unconstitutional because it targets a religious group and discriminates against Muslims. They also argue that it will not make America safer.
